We also aim to provide secure housing, scholarships for education, access to nutritious meals, and promote advocacy, awareness, and acceptance for the transgender community. Everyone is encouraged to approach us for support and be part of our mission to create a compassionate and inclusive society.

History

The transgender community in and around Mysore comprises approximately 700-800 individuals, including transgender males, transgender females, jogappas, jogammas, and others. Living on the fringes of society due to their alternative lifestyles, these individuals often find themselves compelled to resort to illegal and perilous means for livelihood. The Trustees of Hari Murari Charitable Trust, Asha Kirana Charitable Trust, and Bapuji Children’s Home have collaborated to establish an organization named “SPANDANA” with the objective of addressing the needs of the transgender (TG) community. Ms. Pranathi Prakash, a prominent TG activist, has joined hands with Spandana.

Ms. Pranathi Prakash emphasized the immediate necessity of a Drop-in-Center (DIC) for TG individuals. Accordingly, a room with a separate toilet facility has been rented in the central area of Mysore, and the DIC became operational on January 1st, 2024. Operating from 10 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Saturday, SPANDANA DIC provides a safe space located at the CSI Victoria School in the heart of Mysore. Offering healthcare, counseling services, and a platform for community members to connect and collaborate on addressing their concerns.
